97, since you are still growing, I wouldn't try to go too heavy.

BTW, check out "pain in the butt" for my squat regimen.

Also, I'm doing a few extra sets with lighter weights (less than 200lbs) and go down more until thighs are parallel to floor or more. It's helped develop strength for the heavy sets. When I go above 225lbs. I don't go down as much. Thighs are slightly less than parallel to not risk injury to lower back.

And I did 180 on 5 reps today (could have done more but the coaches tell us how many reps to do)

97, sorry I didn't notice your question until now. No, i don't use the cushion. I used to. But now my traps and shoulders are much more developed and I don't feel a thing. If you feel that the bar is pressing against your spine/back of your neck, you may have it too high.

On second thought, if you are more comfortable with the cushion, it's perfectly fine. 8)
